JEE Advanced exam overview

JEE Advanced is the national-level entrance examination used for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology. Indian nationals and OCI/PIO(I) candidates must first qualify JEE Main; foreign nationals and OCI/PIO(F) candidates follow separate direct-registration rules. The exam has two compulsory computer-based papers covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. IIT Roorkee was the organising institute for JEE Advanced 2026, under the Joint Admission Board framework.

  • Mathematics: algebra, matrices, probability, trigonometry, analytical geometry, differential and integral calculus, vectors.

The official JEE Advanced brochure does not publish a single fixed question count or total marks figure that applies to every year: these can vary, so no fixed number is shown here.

Who can take JEE Advanced?

Indian nationals and OCI/PIO(I) candidates must satisfy five official criteria simultaneously:

  1. JEE Main performance: among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (all categories) in the JEE Main B.E./B.Tech paper.
  2. Age limit: born on or after 1 October 2001 (SC/ST/PwD: on or after 1 October 1996).
  3. Attempts: maximum two attempts, in two consecutive years.
  4. First Class 12 appearance: generally must be 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory.
  5. Earlier IIT admission: generally must not have previously accepted an IIT seat, with limited official exceptions.

Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO(F) candidates are not required to write JEE Main and may register directly, subject to separate age, attempt, first-appearance and prior-admission criteria.

Qualifying JEE Advanced does not by itself guarantee an IIT seat: candidates must also pass Class 12 with at least 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or be in the top 20 percentile of their board, and participate in JoSAA counselling.
